Popcorn New Writing Award 2021 open for applications

28 April 2021

The award

Established in 2019 by the Popcorn Group, the Popcorn Writing Award celebrates fearless work that playfully and artistically addresses current affairs and societal trends and contributes positively to public debate.

The award champions brave and imaginative writing at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. It’s the only award of its kind, awarding a prize fund of £6,000 and a guaranteed slot at one of the award’s partner venues which we’re proud to be a part of alongside Gilded Balloon, Pleasance, Summerhall, Traverse and Underbelly.

Each year the Popcorn Group assembles a committee that selects winners from a shortlist to award the prizes.

Due to the fact many elements of the 2021 Fringe are yet to be confirmed, the award will work slightly differently compared to previous years.

Eligibility criteria

All submitted entries will be considered if they are:

1. A new piece of writing which may have only been performed once before

2. Written by a writer or presented by a company, who have been part of the Assembly Festival programme in any year since 2015. If you have presented work at Gilded Balloon, Pleasance, Summerhall, Traverse and Underbelly contact them directly to apply.
